This brief was to deliver a new-build pair of semi-detached houses in North London. A tight plot prompted excavation for a basement level including front and rear courtyards with ground floor access bridges over. The narrow site and depth of plan led to the ‘Hypostyle’ principle, allowing natural light to be dropped into the ground floor living spaces.
The dwelling units twist up around each other through 90 degrees to the narrower upper level to provide well proportioned useable spaces front and rear. Benefits of the location include a high vantage point providing views across London, exploited through a large opening and balcony at first floor level.
Off-site timber construction techniques allowed the main structure to be assembled in one week.
